On a sunny, tropical island, a young boy skillfully picked his way across the rocks among the scar. He was partly fair-haired, and partly a strange maroon colour-haired. He climbed to the highest point in the area, and surveyed the scar. It was barren, all the plant life in that small area had
been killed in the crash. There was no movement,
until the boy noticed a bit of rustling in some bushes. A short, bespectacled boy stumbled backwards out of the brush, and immediately started brushing burrs off of his grubby windbreaker. Then he looked up and saw the other boy standing on the rocks. He ran up to him.
"Hello up there!" he cried, and the other boy looked him up and down, and looked ready to laugh.
"Hullo."
"Are the others here yet?"
The tall boy thought for a second.the others? That's right. There were many boys in the plane when the pilot dropped the ejection pod, just before crashing.
He shook his head.
"Oh I see..what's your name?"
"Yugi."
"Are there any grown-ups?"
Again, Yugi stopped to think. The only grown-up that had been on the plane was the pilot, and there was no way to tell whether he was alive or dead. Yugi shook his head, and then started to grin uncontrollably when it dawned on him that there was no authourity.
He took off his jacket, and stood on his head, still grinning. The other boy just stared.
"Why aren't you doing anything?" Yugi asked, inverted.
"My Auntie said I can't do stuff like that, on account of my asthma.."
"Ass-mar?"
The other boy blushed, and then nodded. Yugi, his mind wandering, began to talk about himself.
"My dad's in the navy, he'll probably come rescue us. He's a great general."
"Oh. My dad's dead....my mom-......well, I live with my Auntie. She owns a candy shop, and I can eat all the candy I want, all the time...."
"Oh....well....it doesn't matter does it? We're here now....that reminds me....I wonder when the others are coming..."
"The others might not even be alive...if they are there's no way for them to know that we're here..."
"You're right."
"Oh...Yugi?"
"Yea?"
"I don't care what the others call me..as long as they don't call me what they did at school..."
"What did they call you?"
"They called me......Weevil......"
Yugi jumped up and, laughing, pointed at Weevil and jeered.
"HAHA! WEEVIL!!"
Weevil quietly took of his glasses, and polished them on his windbreaker. Yugi got bored quickly of Weevil's indifference to his mockery, and jumped into a small pond that was just off the rocks. Weevil watched.
"Why don't you swim too?"
"I can't...on account of my asthma."
"Sucks to your ass-mar!" Yugi laughed.
Weevil kept watching...slightly mesmerized.
"You can't half swim well..."
Suddenly, Yugi's leg caught on something hard on the bottom of the pond. It wasn't deep, so he dove down and brought it ashore.
"It's a shell of some sort...." Yugi said as he examined the object.
"I know what that is! It's a conch! My Auntie had one on her wall....once her friend came over and blew into it, and made an awful racket! I wonder if you could."
Yugi blew into the conch shell....nothing.
"You've got to blow from your gut...try again," Weevil instructed.
Yugi tried again...this time a great trumpeting noise came from it. Yugi grinned, and blew it again, louder this time. He continued blowing until he was completely out of breath. Within a few minutes, boys starting popping out of the undergrowth. Boys of all shapes and colours....
The first boy to reach them was fairly young, and had fair hair.
"What's your name?" Weevil asked...it was necessary to keep track of everyone.
"Max."
Before Weevil could reply, many, many more boys had arrived and gathered before Yugi, as if in a school assembly. Weevil went to as many as he could, and asked for their names. There were Phil, Walter, Wilfred, Stanley and Johnny so far. Weevil approached a very small boy.
"What's your name?" Weevil repeated the same question to the boy as to all the others.
"Percival Wemys Madison. The Vicarage, Harcourt St. Anthony, Hants, telephone Harcourt-341," the boy had a soft voice and was barely audible to Weevil...he proceeded to two boys who looked exactly alike.
"Sam and Eric," the first one said, without being asked.
"Sam and Eric," the other repeated.
"Sam.... and Eric...alright."
Yugi was just about to start his speech, when he was interrupted by the sound of distant singing. He looked down the coastline and saw a crowd of young boys, dressed in black, march up to the scar in a military fashion, singing all the while. When they finally reached the place where the other boys were gathered, one boy wheeled around and shouted, "CHOIR, HALT!"
The leader looked around the little assembly, and said, "Where's the man with the trumpet?"
Yugi spoke, "There's no man with a trumpet, only me."
"Aren't there any adults here?"
Yugi shook his head.
"Then we'll have to look after ourselves..."
Before that thought could be continued, one boy collapsed in the back of the military-like procession. The other boys in the choir started to laugh, and some knelt down to help him, but the leader stopped them.
"Don't bother...he's having fits all that time. Remember?"
The choir boys laughed.
A while later, when the boy that had collapsed was up again, Weevil asked his question.
"What are all your names?"
First there was Mokuba, a younger boy with dark hair. Then there were Kaiba, Joey, Tristan, Keith, Yami Y, Yami B, and the boy that had collapsed earlier, Bakura.
The leader stepped up, "And I'm Malik..... and I think that as long as we're here with no grown-ups...we're going to need a chief."
Weevil stepped in. "I agree...and I think-"
Malik pushed Weevil away, "Who cares what you think, Four-eyes?"
Now it was Yugi's time to step in. "His name's not Four-eyes...it's Weevil!"
The crowd exploded, with jeers and shouts of "Weevil", Weevil backed away and shrunk behind a rock.
Yugi continued, not caring. "Who do you want to be chief?"
The small conglomeration of boys burst at once with shouting.
"Him! The boy with the shell!"
"His name's Yugi.."
"Yugi! Yugi!"
But some boys, mostly the older ones, remained silent.
Yugi hesitated..... "Maybe we should have a vote." The crowd exploded again with cheering. "Alright then...who wants Malik to be chief?" All the hands of the choir-boys went up...no one else's. "And who wants me to be chief?" Everyone else raised their hands sky-high.
Malik started. "But I'm head boy, and I can sing high C sharp!" Still there were more hands for Yugi. "Alright then. Yugi's chief."
Yugi noted the disappointment painted on Malik's face, and spoke, "The first thing I'm going to do as chief, is allow you, Malik, to be in control of your choir...you can make them whatever you want!"
"Alright then...they'll be hunters."
"Ok...the first thing we need to do now, is to find out if this is an island. If it isn't an island, then we'll be rescued right away. If it is an island....then....I don't know. Only three of us will go to explore. I'll go, and Malik...and...." Yugi looked around the crowd of boys with raised hands, all wanting to explore, "and Bakura."
Bakura stood up readily, and joined Malik and Yugi. They were walking away, about to start climbing the rocky cliff side, when they noticed Weevil following them.
Yugi started, "You can't come! Three's enough....you stay here and take names!"
"You told them..."
"Huh?"
"You told them...even after I said I didn't want..."
"What are you talking about?"
"About being called Weevil..."
"Well...I'm sorry if you feel that way....but stay here and take names. That's your job."
Weevil stayed, and the three boys climbed.
After a good deal of walking, they heard a horrible wail coming from the brush. There was a piglet, trapped in some creepers. Malik grinned, and pulled out a knife which he had been carrying. He raised it above the piglet, and hesitated to let it come down. Eventually, the piglet escaped, and bounded into the forest with terrified screams.
Yugi and Bakura only stared at Malik, and he saw them. He looked down for a second, then looked up and slammed the knife into a tree.
A while later, the boys arrived at the highest point of the area. There was sea all around, and the area around the great rock was scattered with great pink rocks. They were all thinking the same thing, but Malik was the first to say it.
"What a place for a fort!"
The boys agreed. Yugi found a sturdy log, which they placed under a nearby boulder and used it as a lever. They sent the boulder hurtling down, and heard it smashing trees, and break something as it hit the end of its run.
"Wacco!"
"Wizard!"
"Smashing!"
They stayed up there for a while, enjoying the view quietly. Malik decided to bring the subject up again.
"We could build a wizard fort..."
But it was getting late, and Bakura had declared his hunger, so the boys returned to the makeshift camp where Weevil was waiting for them.
